A community of fiction writers and writers about fiction. For us, fiction is about both popular appeal and critical excellence.

What we do

We create and celebrate new stories, made in Manchester and shared with the globe. Set up by a team of novelists, literary critics and postgraduate researchers, we bring together the best in critical and creative approaches to fiction.

We have expertise in every part of the fiction-writing process, from creating prize-winning books to studying the publishing industry. Our unique focus on process emphasises fiction as something that is made.

Our identity is intrinsically linked to Manchester’s history of radical thinking and industrial success, and its status as a UNESCO City of Literature.

We encourage collaboration between critics, fiction writers and external partners to promote engagement with fiction by writers and readers.

Fiction courses and supervision

We support the study of fiction from undergraduate and postgraduate levels to PhD studies and beyond. This includes the popular fiction pathway in Manchester Writing School’s MA/MFA in Creative Writing.

We’re home to many doctoral students working on critical and creative writing PhDs.

Public engagement and other activities

We’re committed to bringing our research into the wider community locally, nationally and internationally. Our members talk regularly about their research at festivals and events worldwide.

We’re home to the Manchester Fiction Prize, a leading international award for fiction. This £10,000 prize supports emerging writers and celebrates the best in contemporary short fiction.
